Plattsburgh Cardinals Ice Hockey
Plattsburgh State’s Cardinal Hockey team has consistently been a national powerhouse in men’s and women’s ice hockey. Coaches Stephen Moffat (men’s) and Kevin Houle (women’s) comb the country recruiting players who have dedicated their lives to the sport of hockey. To them, it is more than just a game; it’s a way of life. This passion for the game and their relentless pursuit of excellence combine to produce the Cardinal’s trademark playing style – fast, aggressive, and high-scoring.
Women’s Hockey Accolades
The Cardinal’s women’s hockey teams are one of the best programs in NCAA ice hockey history. The Lady Cardinals have won seven NCAA D-III Championships, seven ECAC Western Division Championships, and two NEWHL Conference Championships. The Cardinals’ 2006-2007 championship team went undefeated; a feat accomplished just four other times in any level of NCAA hockey history. The 2014-2017 Cardinal program was the first NCAA ice hockey program to win four straight National Championships.
Men’s Hockey Accolades
In addition to winning two NCAA Division III championships, the men’s hockey team has won 18 SUNYAC titles.
Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena
The Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena, also known as Cardinal Country, is part of the Plattsburgh State Field House and is the site of every Cardinal home game. The facility underwent a $2.1 million renovation in the Summer of 2008, which included installing 1,517 theater-style seats and 407 standing rail positions—moving the penalty box and scorer’s table opposite the team benches greatly improved spectator navigation. In addition to wireless Internet connections, giant LED scoreboards were installed. The improvements all add up to create one of the most electric atmospheres in college sports. Expect great food, fun entertainment, and exciting competition the whole family is sure to love.
