Winter is the perfect time to enjoy a family vacation at the Lake Placid Olympic Sites. From Olympic history to outdoor activities, you can have a memorable experience with your loved ones by visiting some local sites that played a part in the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics.

Lake Placid’s Olympic legacy

When Melvil Dewey, the inventor of the Dewey Decimal System, set up a social group in 1895 called “The Lake Placid Club,” he couldn’t have known just how much it would change the world. He originally envisioned the club as a way to meet friends and enjoy winter sports in his small town of Lake Placid, New York. This small town would eventually become the winter sports capital of America and host the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980.

In 1929, Lake Placid was chosen to host the 1932 Winter Olympics because of its reputation as a premier destination for winter sports and the impassioned pitch by Melvil’s son, Godfrey Dewey. For the US team, it became one of the most successful Winter Olympic games ever. The United States won the medal tally for the first time, topping all other nations.

In 1980, the Winter Olympics returned to Lake Placid and brought over 1,000 athletes from 37 nations with them. With tensions high in the Cold War, the United States Olympic Hockey Team captivated the nation by beating the Soviet Olympic Hockey Team in the semi-final round known as the “Miracle On Ice.”
